Pam Blurton Brantley

Pam Blurton Brantley's husband Terry graduated after the Class of 69...but he had the privilege of marrying one of the great classmates of the Class of 69. Pam is such a wonderful friend and person. When she first told a group of us that Terry had cancer and had the Poem's Syndrome there was not a lot to say except that we would pray for him. Researching this disease I found that there was no cure, and that it was terminal. Terry did go to Memphis and try something that was experimental...in the last few months Pam had reported that he was feeling better. So to get the following email from Pam is the best news I could possibly hope to share with all of you...God has surely performed a miracle for Pam & Terry and their family. Although we are sorry for the loss of his mother last week...we are also happy for his blessing. Please continue to keep them in your prayers...

HELLO OUT THERE TO ALL MY E-MAIL FRIENDS:

AFTER ALL THE SORROW WE WENT THROUGHT LAST WEEK WITH LOSING TERRY'S MOTHER. WE RECEIVED THE MIRACLE OF ALL MIRACLES YESTERDAY.

TERRY HAD A DOCTORS APPOINTMENT IN MEMPHIS YESTERDAY. WE WENT FOR THE RESULTS OF HIS PET SCAN AND BLOOD TEST. HIS CANCER IS GONE AND THERE IS NO SIGN OF POEMS SYNDROME.

WE QUESTIONED THE ONCOLOGIST. FOLKES, WE ARE TALKING PLASMA CYTOMA AND POEMS SYNDROME ( BOTH SUPPOSE TO BE INCURABLE) DOCTOR SAID THEY ARE NOT THERE.

THE LORD HAS HEALED TERRY. HE IS THE ONLY ONE THAT COULD HAVE DONE THIS. I KNOW THESE DOCTORS ARE TRAINED IN THEIR SPECIALTY. BUT, WE KNOW WHO IS IN CONTROL AND WE GIVE GOD ALL THE GLORY. HALLELUYAH!

TERRY ASK THE DR. IF HE WOULD EVER WALK AGAIN. HE SAID HE DID NOT KNOW. HE NEEDS TO SEE HIS NEUROLOGIST TO SEE IF HIS NERVES CAN BE FIXED.

GOD CAN DO ANYTHING.

THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR LOVE AND ESPECIALLY YOUR PRAYERS. TERRY IS AN EXAMPLE OF WHAT PRAYER CAN DO.

Caruthersville's Fair

Cape has a big district fair that was just over last week...I got my monster bag of cotton candy which is just about all I can handle. But when the fair comes to town...I always think of the Caruthersville Fair.

For several years I lived just down the road from the fairgrounds...night after night I would see the brightly lit ferris wheel turning...and I could hear the screams from the kids riding the paratrooper (which was one of my favorite rides). My friends and I could ride the Scrambler and the Tilt A Whirl all night. And you always wanted to be the one on the end of the Scrambler that didn't get "squoosed"..cause getting "squoosed" could cause a girl to laugh so hard they chanced wetting their pants. Sorry, but true.

Earlier years there were the "shows"...as my dad would call them the "hootchy cootchy" shows...the boys would always come to school the next day and tell us how they would sneak in and get a peek. Anyone want to admit to that...I have names.

There were horse races...I once presented a blanket to the winner of one of the races...standing next to Senator Stuart Symington and Thomas Eagleton. At twelve I could have cared less.

I still have a sawdust clown that I once bought as a souvenir...and we used to get the silver necklaces and have our friends names engraved on them and wear them at least a week before the chain broke.

Malone's taffy...which still frequents the Cape fair...loved the fresh taste of a warm piece of taffy.
Candy apples which no one could eat because of our braces...

We always looked forward to the fair coming to town... I have to say that a year or so ago I decided to share the Scrambler ride with my granddaughter..I had great expectations of the great rides I always had with my friends...got sick as a dog...yep, I'll just stick with the monster bag of cotton candy, and watch everyone else turn circles...woooo!!!

Reply to Wannie

Anita Dunagan Roy said...
Just an interesting reply about the principals ya'll have forgotten....at Southside it was Miss Bethel Maloore (sp?) who shared a 5th grade class with Faye Cantrell. I was in that class and I remember the swap at noon to the other teacher!

At Lee Rood, seems like we had James S.Bruton and we found out the "S" stood for SHIRLEY!!!!

Now Wannie, I do remember those days of getting to walk to the store to get gum for all those who made 100 on a spelling test (did our parents know that?) and here's the MILKMAN story! Ferrell Faulkner was the milkman who drove the truck to school and always waved at Barbara Shaw when we were outside at recess. . . he later married Peggy (?) who worked at First State Bank with my Dad for years. NOW he has a granddaughter at the school I teach in Jackson, TN and he and Peggy attend field day and special events with her. I still smile when I think of how we were making a romance out of that friendly wave!

I think often of our school days in C'ville and how simple it all was compared to today. I hope that I have created happy memories for the 25+ years of K-students I have taught in W. TN.Anita Dunagan Roy

Another Boring day in the neighborhood

I was sitting in my office checking my Facebook, watching a little news, and my daughter was leaving...she stuck her head back in the front door and told me to come outside...in the street beside our studio were...about 10 police cars, hundreds of policemen (a slight exaggeration but this is my story) and lots of guns drawn and pointing at an apartment house. Lots of people had gathered to watch the action. Apparently a young man had told someone that he had robbed the Dollar General Store which is across the street from the studio....he started running and ran into an apartment behind our studio. The building was surrounded...the sweet police dog was there also...they brought out one guy in handcuffs, and then went into the building with guns drawn...shields and bullet proof vests...about 45 minutes worth of excitement...then we find out...it was a false report...no robbery...no suspect...oh well...it was fun watch Cape CSI in action...

Heard from the President

Yes I got an email from the President...of our senior class...Denny Meredith...so glad to hear from him...he is far away in another country and doing well. We sure hope you can make it to the reunion Denny.

This was a wild weekend with Hurricane Ike...there were actually wind gusts up to 70 mph here...lots of tree damage. Imagine what it was like in Texas. Poor Galveston, and the smaller towns hit so hard.

May we all feel blessed...and be thankful.

9.11.2001

Many of us remember where we were the day that President Kennedy was assassinated. It will always be a part of history that we all shared. As will September 11, 2001.

My son lives in New York City, he has for 11 years. That particular day he was home with us due to the birth of our third grandchild on September 5th. He was to fly back to New York on the 13th. While watching the news the first plane struck the World Trade Center. I woke my son and we all started watching together as the tragedy unfolded. All of the shock of just watching, knowing that people were in that building.

Then my phone started ringing...all of our friends and neighbors wanting to know if my son was safe. I can't tell you how that felt. It hit me hard that if he had been there, I would have been helpless, as all of the families involved were. My son started trying to call his friends and co-workers. He could not reach anyone due to the phone system being overwhelmed.

That evening, my son had a message on his cell phone, which is a New York number...it was a young man who had called the wrong number, and was searching for information on his father who was a firefighter. My son called him back to tell him that he had called the wrong number so he could call the correct number to get help. He told my son that his father had been involved in the early rescue, and they had not heard from him. My son got his name and wished him the best. He looked on the list of victims when it was released and the young man's father was listed as a fatality. No one that my son knew was hurt, but he will always remember his conversation with this young man and what he went through that day. He still lives in New York City.

Today I hope we all put our politics aside, say a prayer for the victims of the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and all the flights involved. Pray for continued strength for their families, and pray for our troops and for safety for our country.

I invite you all to share where you were and how you felt on that day 7 years ago.

Lots to say

Last night we had our second planning meeting for the Class of 69's 40th reunion...did we ever work hard...we accomplished a great deal...had pizza...and a great time. Our reunion is going to be so much fun...just a hint...Friday night, Saturday morning for Ladies, Saturday night, and Sunday morning...with a wonderful surprise. Mark the date May 22-24, 2009. We still need some addresses...I will post the ones we need after Charlie checks some more of them out. We are also still missing a lot of information forms...

Now the parade October 3rd, 2008...we will meet at 3:30 at the Caruthersville Fire Station...we will load up the firetruck...join the parade...win our prize...and then tailgate at the field before the game, then have a very spirited time watching the CHS Tigers win. Please wear red & white...or bring your pom poms...Charlie is having a sign made for us...and we will be throwing out sweet stuff for the youngun's. Please join us...it will be so much fun...and we have a great chance of winning. Let Charlie know or comment here if you will attend.

Just a note...today I went to grandparents day at my 12 year old granddaughter's school. Their 7th and 8th grade are in Cape's old high school. WOW the steps are so many!!!! I remember the CHS steps and how we would go up and down them in no time...I was a tad bit slower today...classes and teachers have really changed...I did enjoy the experience with her however.

I know that I will have my worst recurring dream tonight...I am in school, and I don't remember which class I am supposed to be in...and I don't have my schedule...my hair is teased sky high, and I am wearing bell bottoms....scary!

Ike is looking pretty mean

Hurricane Ike is really looking rough...I know our friends in Florida, Louisiana, Texas, Mississippi, and all the states bordering the water...are gearing up for the worst of weather...and taking precautions for their safety...please keep all of these people who will be in Ike's path in your prayers.

Class of 68

This past weekend the Class of 1968 had their 40th reunion...from what I have heard everyone had a great time visiting with old friends. A few have mentioned that they enjoy reading our blog...I hope everyone will read this blog...I have fun writing on it. I just wish others would add comments or let me know if you want to blog and I will send you the password.

I mentioned in an earlier blog that I joined Facebook...WOW...it is so cool...I have connected with so many CHS members...both older and younger than me. And I have made some new friends that just click on because we have something in common. You might consider joining...it really keeps people connected. This is not a paid plug.

A reminder that our next planning committee is Sept. 9th...at 6:00 at the Country Club...our meetings are always a mini-reunion...come join us!

Parades of old

This has been a busy weekend...I hope you all had a happy and safe Labor Day.

Friday I went to the local camera shop and picked up three DVD's with my dad's old 8mm movies transferred to them. My dad got a Kodak movie camera in 1953...I was two years old. I remember his pride in showing guests the movies he had taken on a Kodak projector and a pull down screen. He wasn't the best of movie makers...sometimes the camera would turn to his face...of course I knew that was when he was winding the camera. Some of them aren't quite in focus...and some the sun was so bright you could only see spots on the screen.

But he always took movies of the parades in Caruthersville. I started watching these and was absolutely fascinated...people lined the streets all the way down the parade route. Christmas parades...the bands (remember the old wool maroon and gold band uniforms?), floats and lots of old cars and people riding horses (of course they were always at the end of the parade...wonder why?)...he filmed the Centennial Parade in 1957...the Clydesdale's were there, the hearse carrying the casket with the razor in it. Folks loved a parade...

I hope they still do...the Spirit parade in Caruthersville will be lots of fun if people will show up... not only to participate but to stand on the street and watch and wave as the floats go by...I bet if my daddy was still here...he would have his movie camera pressed against his eye and film every bit of it...
